Get Started
If you're new to the VA disability claims process, it can feel like stepping into a system with its own language and its own rules. That's normal. Here's the process, so you know what to expect before you file, or before you decide what to do next with a claim you've already started.
- Gather evidence. Before you file, collect what supports your claim: your service records, your VA and private medical records, and statements from people who have seen how your condition affects you.
- File a claim. You (or a representative) submit a claim to VA identifying your conditions and the evidence supporting them.
- VA development. VA gathers your records and, in most cases, schedules a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam to evaluate your condition.
- Decision. VA issues a rating decision. It assigns a percentage and an effective date to each condition it grants service connection for, and explains the reason for any denial.
- Appeal, if needed. If you disagree with the decision, you have options under the modern appeals system: a Supplemental Claim, Higher-Level Review, or an appeal to the Board of Veterans' Appeals, each with its own timeline and strategy.
Where you are in this process changes what matters most. If you haven't filed yet, getting your evidence right from the start matters most. If you've already gotten a decision, understanding your effective date, your rating percentage, and your appeal deadlines matters most. We work with veterans at every stage of this process, from a first-time filing to an appeal years in.
